The Violence Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) vowed to support the Philippine Swimming League (PSL) in its effort to fight for corruption in sports.

VACC President and Founder Dante Jimenez said “you may count on VACC for whatever support we can extend to PSL in this issue, what ever led to this questionable situation of our sports which seem to have been politicized and corrupted.”

PSL President Susan Papa and Senator Pia Cayetano asked the Senate of the Philippines to let the Philippine Sport Commission explain on how the agency’s budget has ben disburse for the past years.

“Among the issues raised, Senator Cayetano wants the PSC to explain include the manner how the PSC allocates monetary support given to the NSAs, athlete groups and individual athletes as well as its method in selecting the sport for funding,” said Papa.

During the Senate Hearing, PSC Chairman Ricardo Garcia and Executive Director Guillermo Iroy Jr. were present.

“We need to know how much is given per NSA and if there are separate fundings given to groups that are not NSAs. We like to have a complete list of these and individuals athletes,” quoted Cayetano as saying.

Cayetano added “I will suggest that we suspend interpellation to give them, PSC, time to put together their data and submit to us.”

Jimenez, for his part, said “it is important that abuses and dishonest practices must now put to stop permanently. The young athletes must not be deprive of their human rights, and you have my full support.”

“We are delighted of allies coming in and we want to thanked the patron and Godfather that has been supporting and giving all the wisdom and grace,” added Papa who was with former Senator Nikki Coseteng at the Senate Hearing.

PAALAM, LOY, CRUZ
by: Armando (Manding) Bautista

The untimely departure of  Antonio "LOY” Cruz, who was 68  years old only (born July 23, 1946),  a shocking news from many of our friends in the sports circle.

A  former PACA President, chairman of PHILYCLING,  “LOY”  as he was called by many, died of stage 4 Cancer last November  20,  but the sudden departure gave me some time to look back of our past relationship while he served as the Philippines’ Philippines Amateur Cycling (PACA) and Chairman of the Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines (PHICYCLING).

Loy is known as an athletic type person regularly work out like BIKING at the eliptical circle  to keeps himself fit. He is known for joking ability, whether in- and- out of cycling, there are times, he cracks practical jokes, putting a “ panutsa” on the crack wheel of his friend’s bike,  like buying all the vendors merchandise, yun buong laman ng balut basket, bibilin, at ipamimigay lang, maski anuman ito, fruits, vegatables, fishes, etc.. he will buy it for the heck of giving it to his friends.

He used to have a regular race competition at the elliptical circle, normally,  prizes comes from the sponsors, “ sa kanya hindi’ galling ito sa bulsa ng magkakapatid na Cruz brothers, Boy, Jun, Lando, and Ricky-( Imelda and Adelina Cruz)  the recently concluded “ Fil-Am Grand Prix”

Since timing is an essence to be concerned while we were still preparing for the 6th World University Cycling Championship,  to put everything in proper prospective and will ask Loy  to lead for us in this WUC championship program.

We are all  sadden of the outcome of this untimely death, I even ask  his brothers, about his status,  a week before his sudden departure, we surely understand that God has a reason for taking Loy  early, and I hope Loy is in God’s hand and may rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to his wife Teresita “Baby”  revilla, Cruz and his 4 children,  Mischelle, Jenifer, Tambi and Peter.

Libing na nya Bukas- Lahat ng gusting maki paglibing-pumunta sa WESCOR 1:00 PM

I will really miss you, President, Chairman “ Loy Cruz”. Goodbye my friend and comrade!

Senate defers PSC budget approval

by JEFFERSON ANTIPORDA REPORTER

THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) on Thursday failed to persuade the Senate to approve its proposed 2015 budget because of numerous issues facing the commission that require explanation.

It was Sen. Pia Cayetano who moved that the consideration of the budget of the PSC be suspended until officials of the commission explain in detail the issues being raised by various athlete groups.

“I will suggest that we suspend interpellation to give them [PSC] time to put together their data and submit [them] to us,” Cayetano said.

The Philippine Swimming League (PSL) headed by its president Susan Papa appealed to the senators to temporarily suspend the budget proceedings. The PSL has its own successful grassroots development program, the longest running for swimming in the country. Former senator Nikki Coseteng is the group’s honorary chairman.

Papa, in an interview, said training and development of athletes in swimming and other sports suffered because of the PSC’s failure to follow its mandate. The PSC is supposed to have overall say on the sport programs of the government.

But, according to the PSL chairman, PSC officials allowed the commission to be under the command of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the dictates of National Sports Associations (NSAs).

POC is a private, non-government organization composed of all NSAs in the Philippines.

“PSC is a government body [so] how can the POC have control over it? If this kind of situation will continue, our sports development will continue to suffer,” Papa said in an interview with The Manila Times.

She added that the decision of the Senate to defer the approval of the PSC budget is a welcome development because the commission would be forced to provide the chamber a detailed explanation on issues that have been affecting the country’s sports development.

“I’m very happy that the Senate temporarily suspended deliberations on the PSC budget. We will fight for it and we will closely monitor their [PSC] actions. We will no longer tolerate what they are doing and we are no longer scared also,” Papa said.

Among the issues Cayetano wants the PSC to explain include the manner the PSC allocates monetary support given to the NSAs, athletes groups and individual athletes, as well as its method in selecting the sport it is funding.

“We need to know how much is given per NSA and if there are separate fundings given to groups that are not NSAs. We’d like to have a complete list of these and individual athletes,” she said.

The senator noted that she wants a detailed explanation from the PSC because of numerous complaints she received that the commission has made life difficult for the athletes and other groups.

MANILA, Philippines - Promising tankers Aubrey Tom, Michael Lozada, Kyla Soguilon and Martin Jacob Pupos smashed records in their respective age groups on the opening day of the 70th Philippine Swimming League Series dubbed as the 2014 Sen. Nikki Coseteng Swimming Championships at the Diliman Preparatory School.

Tom topped the girls’ 7 years 50-meter butterfly by submitting 42.81 seconds and surpassing the 42.84 old mark of Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh while Soguilon registered 37.03 seconds in the girls 9 years 50m backstroke to erase her previous record of 38.03 seconds.

Sharing the spotlight was Lozada who checked in at 41.40 seconds in the boys’ 8 years 50m backstroke, beating the 44.43-secondS of Lance Cruz while Pupos dominated the boys’ 200m Individual Medley in 2:18.65, better than the 2:19.34 old record of Gian Berino.

“We are conducting tryouts for Universiade one and a half years ahead of time to prepare the swimmers. Every qualified swimmer earns the right to participate on her/his own. They are chosen fairly and squarely. No politics. No favoritism. The process is open to all. This is the integrity of the PSL,” said former Sen. Nikki Coseteng.

Also winning gold medals were Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh (girls’ 8), Inaki Emil Lorbes (boys’ 13), Daryl Concepcion (boys’ 12), Paul Christian Cusing (boys’ 14) and Angelica Medrano (girls’ 14).

The Philippine Swimming League (PSL) will stage its 69th PSL Leg Series on November 9 at the Panaad Sports Complex in Bacolod City.

The one-day event, hosted by the Panaad Swimming team, will serve as a tryout for the 2015 Summer World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea, and other tournaments in China, Australia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, India and South Africa.

“The swimmers will be awarded with medals for the top finishers and trophies for most outstanding swimmers. Top 3 teams will also be awarded team championship trophies. Participants will test their readiness in preparation for the international competition in Bangkok,” said PSL President Susan Papa.

More than 200 swimmers from Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo, Cebu, Bohol, Cavite, Bacolod and other neighboring cities have confirmed their participation in the series.

“PSL is getting ready for the Universiade 2015 and we are almost in the final stage of our selection. We will maximize our participation to educate the swimming community that there is opportunity to experience to compete with the world best swimmers and make this event a motivational factor for every swimmer and for them to realize that we are way behind and catch up with the lost time.,” added Papa.

“Also a lot of good swimmers failed to experience the world Universiade, the second largest international event next to Olympics. There are good swimmers like Frigilliana, Danila, Grabador, Arabejo, etc. but they did not compete in the World University Games. Other good swimmers like Axel Ngui, Charles Walker, Celina Gonzales did not join the selection which we have been announcing. I am sorry but the Universiade is far better than the Asian Games and Sea Games,” Papa said.

The PSL is the national sports association for swimming of the Federation of School Sports Associations of the Philippines (FESSAP). It has the longest running swimming grassroots development program in the country. The PSL is also an affiliate to Federation International Sports University.
