Basas and Dawson were enjoying an 13-12 advantage, when a net error allowed their rivals to force a 13-all deadlock.
Capitalizing on an opportunity with the deadlock, Dawis unleashed three service aces, which sent them into the finals against Carrera and Lleda. This also allowed them to stay unbeaten after six games, ending the eliminations with a five-game sweep. In the first set of the finals, Carrera and Lleda each had two aces, as they broke from a 17-all tie. In the final set, a net violation allowed Dawis and Sarmiento to tie the match twice, the last at 20-all. Bataoil said the province plans to continue holding and promoting outdoor sporting activities among the Pangasinense youth, and beach volleyball is one of them. |
Pangasinan bets win Petron volley 2nd leg
May 1, 2013 LINGAYEN-- Pangasinense spikers Melanie Carrera and Cassandra Lleda weathered the strong breeze blowing northwards as they got past University of the East spikers Leuseth Dawis and Pia Sarmiento, 21-18, 22-20, to win the second leg of the 2013 Petron Ladies’ Beach Volleyball tournament at the beachfront of the provincial capitol grounds. Wary of an afternoon breeze which ruined most of their high-flying shots, the former University of Luzon standouts played a cautious game en route to the win, clinching for them a seat in the Petron Volleyball Battle of the Champions in Boracay this coming October. With the match tied at 20-all, the Pangasinense bets moved ahead after Dawis smashed a long volley out of bounds. They then clinched the championship when Lleda hit an ace, launching the ball towards Dawis’ direction. They went into celebration as the ball hit the back of a crouching Dawis, before quickly bouncing off Sarmiento’s front and went out of range. “Sobrang lakas ng hangin, kaya kailangan may control kami sa bola namin, said the 24-year-old Carrera, who claimed her first crown with Lleda in this spikefest, held as part of the province’s annual celebration of the Pistay Dayat festival. Cong. Leopoldo Bataoil (second district) and provincial executive assistant Modesto Operana awarded the trophies to the winners in this Petron event, also supported by Mikasa Balls and the provincial government of Pangasinan through Gov. Amado Espino. The duo, who represented the provincial engineering office, arranged a showdown with Dawis and Sarmiento after they eased out identical twins, Nieza and Jeziela Viray, 21-12, 21-5, in the semifinals. DASMARINAS, Cavite --Giselle Bembo and Maribeth Lara used their familiarity of their home sand-court as they came up
with precise hits to dominate the first leg of the 11th Petron Ladies’ Beach Volleyball Tournament at the De La Salle Health Sciences Institute campus here.
They capped their five-game winning run with a 21-17 stopping of Rizal Technological University-1 spikers
Jessa Aranda and Jonafer San Pedro in this beach volley extravaganza backed by Petron and Mikasa Balls.
The win allowed Bembo to claim her second title with a new partner. She and former teammate Jennifer Manzano
took the title last year at the expense of University of the East bets Francislyn Cais and Jessica Paron.
After Aranda and San Pedro threatened for the last time at 7-9, when Lara’s placement shot went out of bounds, the La Salle-Dasma bets unleashed seven straight points, three on kills by Lara, plus two service winners by Bembo, to cut loose at 16-7.
“Masaya kami sa panalo. Hindi namin inaasahan ito,” said Bembo, a 20-year-old mass communications student.
The RTU bets still managed to stage a comeback late the game.
With the Lady Patriots enjoying an 18-11 lead, Lara’s return shot went wide in the next play, giving the RTU volleybelles a chance to rally to within two at 16-18 on Aranda’s two aces.
Lara’s service winner, followed by a wide, crosscourt spike by Aranda then settled the game in favor of DLSU-D 2 at 20-16.
After Bembo and Lara completed a three-game sweep of the Group A in the eliminations, they made their way into the finals
after repulsing the Yongco sisters Iari and Iumi, 21-16, in the semifinals.
Aranda and San Pedro, on the other hand, turned back promising Philippine School of Business Administration spikers Naomi Lei Otoshi and Joan Marvie Morata, 21-8, in the other semis playoff.
Winners and runners-up of each of the volleyball leg will earn berths to the Petron Battle of Champions at year’s end.

February 4, 2013 - The Final Report of the 2nd Asian University Beach Volleyball Championship - Thailand
PREFACE
This is the final report of the 2nd Asian University Beach Volleyball Championship which was held during November 17 – 30, 2012. This document collected the implementation data and the competition results as well as the evaluation results of the satisfaction of athletes, staff and officers of the organising committee and the spectators who were randomly selected in sampling these target group. These results will be reported to the Asian University Sports Federation, the Office of the Higher Education Commission, the University Sports Board of Thailand and Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University which was assigned to represent the Thailand Universities and to act as host for the event this time. They will also be used to guide the development of competition to further advance the university sports and to disseminate the results to the public.
This competition had major support of faculty staff and students of the Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University as host,
the University Sports Board of Thailand, the Office of the Commission on Higher Education, the Asian University Sports
Federation, the Volleyball Association of Thailand, the Cha-Am Municipality, the Cha-Am Khun-Ying Nuangburi
School and the Cha-Am Municipality School. There was also a great support from Thailand Company Beverage
Marketing Co., Ltd, Grand Sport Group Co., Ltd., Siam Inter Multimedia Pub. Ltd., Mikasa Industries (Thailand) Ltd. and
other anonymous supporters: all of these enterprises and individuals assisted and cooperated very well during the
tournament and this was admired with great praise from both foreigners and Thai people.

LINGAYEN, Philippines -- Pangasinan-1’s Jennifer Manzano and her new partner Cindy Benitez tamed the breezy winds blowing towards Lingayen Gulf in claiming the the2012 Petron Ladies’ Beach Volleyball Battle of Champions crown Friday here.
Low-angled shots across the net did the trick for the 24-year-old Manzano and Benitez, who wasted no time disposing of Rizal Technological University standouts Jessa Aranda and rookie Jonafer San Pedro, 21-8, 21-9, in the finals at the provincial capitol beachfront grounds.
“Sinabi ko sa kanya huwag taasan ang bola. Mahangin, kaya mababa lang, said Manzano, who earned her sixth title in the Petron volleyball series. She took the second-leg crown with Benitez last May.
Manzano fired three aces to jumpstart Pangasinan-1 to a 5-1 lead in the first set, before her drop shots with Benitez allowed them move out of range 10-3.
A couple of aces from Benitez, a former University of the Cordilleras (UC) Lady Jaguars standout, who now works for the Benguet Electric Cooperative, then saw Pangasinan-1 dominating the game, 15-5.
Adjusting better to the westerly, late-morning winds in the second set, Manzano and Benitez had little trouble gathering steam with their 7-2 advantage.
Momentum was now on their side when Pangasinan-1 moved away for good, 14-7, en route to the title triumph.
The spikefest is supported by Speedo, Mikasa, media partner Business Mirror, the province of Pangasinan, through Gov. Amado Espino Jr. and Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil (second district).
Manzano, a graduate of La Salle-Dasmarinas and is now the assistant coach of the women’s varsity team, and Benitez made it to the finals after they got past Pangasinan-2’s Melanie Carrera and Cassandra Lleda in the semifinals, 21-14, 21-11.
Aranda and San Pedro earned a crack at the title after beating last year’s Battle of Champions winner Francislyn Cais and new teammate Kryssel Cueva of University of the East-1, 17-21, 21-16, 15-9 in the other semis battle.
Manzano and Benitez will represent the country in the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia in July.

According to the PVSB, the top choices in both categories in the National Students Beach Volleyball qualifying competitions will represent the Philippines in the to the 2nd Asian University Beach Volleyball Championship in Cha-Am, Thailand from November 27-30, 2012.
The top choices coaches are Henry James Pecaña and Emiliano C. Lontoc for University of Santo Tomas (UST) and Michael R. Cariño for the University of Perpetual Help-Las Piñas City.
Meanwhile, the De La Salle University of Dasmariñas City tandem of 2011 Shenzhen Universiade veteran Jennifer Manzano and Cindy Benitez won the fiinal leg of Petron Beach Volleyball Circuit held in Lingayen, Pangasinan Province over the weekend.
Manzano and Benitez thus earned the right to represent the country in the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia in July 2013.
Prof. Robert Milton Calo, the FESSAP Executive Vice President, will be the Head of Delegation for the Philippine contingent to the 2nd Asian University Championship in Thailand.
Prof. Calo will be assisted by Gerardo Sergio, the athletic director of De La Salle University- Dasmariñas City.
In partnership Bestank, AgriNurture Inc (ANI), Healthy Options, San Miguel Corporation and Cobra Energy Drink, the FESSAP will send athletes in 10 international University Sports Federation (FISU) biennially.
The three university teams – UST, Perpetual Help and DLSU-Dasmariñas - will all participate in the 2nd Asian University Beach Volleyball Championship in Thailand.

Manzano and Benitez topped the final leg of the 2012 Petron Beach Volleyball Circuit held in Lingayen, Pangasinan over the weekend to earn the right to represent the country in the prestigious, 12-day sports and cultural festival being organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) in Kazan, the capital and largest city in the Republic of Tatarstan.
This will be the second straight time that Manzano will carry the country’s colors in the Universiade.
In the 2011 Shenzhen (China) Universiade, Manzano teamed-up with Satchell Senupre to reach the round-of-17 against the pair of Varapatsorn Radarong and Tannaratha Udomchavee of Thailand.
The Filipinas, however, lost to their Thai counterparts, 42-18 ( 21-8, 21-10).
The talented Filipina duo arranged the round-of-17 match against the Thai pair by humbling Maria Cristina Monterrey and Angelica Maria Jimenez of Costa Rica in three sets, 52-47 (21-15, 16-21, 15-11) in the round of 25.
The Filipinas earlier dropped their matches against Brazil, 42-12; Norway, 42-16; and Italy, 42-15, in the Group E preliminary phase; and United States, 42-19, in the first round of the 29-nation, 58-player competition.
Aside from beach volleyball, the Philippines will also take part in 10 other sports -- athletics, archery, badminton, basketball, chess, fencing, swimming, table tennis, tennis and weightlifting.
Earlier, the Federation of School SportsAssociation of the Philippines (FESSAP), the sole governing body in the country recognized by FISU, has appointed Philippine Federation of Body Builders, Inc. (PFBB) vice-president Col. Ariel Querubin as the official flag-bearer during the opening ceremony.
The appointment of Co. Querubin was jointly announced by FESSAP president David Ong and 27th Universiade Philippine delegation head Antonio Tiu during a dinner-meeting in Manila recently.
Among those witnessed the appointment of Col. Querubin were FESSAP Executive Committee members, led by Ong, executive vice president Prof. Robert Milton Calo, and vice presidents Christian Tan, Teresita Abundo, Richard Cuartero, and Dr. Diosdado Amante, and deputy head of delegation Dennis Sia.
The Filipino delegation to the Kazan Universiade will be supported by San Miguel Corporation, Cobra Energy Drink, Healthy Options, AgriNurture Inc. (ANI) and Bestank.

Rizal Tech, UE win Petron volley opener
LINGAYEN--Team Pangasinan-1’s Jennifer Manzano and new partner Cindy Benitez held their ground as expected at the start of the 2012 Petron Ladies’ Beach Volleyball Battle of Champions here.
But two other varsity squads from Metro Manila, Rizal Technological University bets Jessa Aranda and her rookie teammate Jonafer San Pedro, together with University of the East-2 pair Leusheth Dawis and Ashlee Razon, prevailed as well at the wind-blown, beach-front sand-courts of the capitol grounds here. The 24-year-old spiker from the municipality of Binalonan and Benitez came up with a pair of rousing wins, alongside Aranda and San Pedro to grab the upperhand in their respective brackets. Former champion Manzano and Benitez first outplayed Philippine School of Business Administration duo Joan Arceo and Grace Masangkay, 21-11, in this spikefest supported by Speedo, Mikasa, media partner Business Mirror, the province of Pangasinan through Gov. Amado Espino Jr. and Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil (second district). Then, the two fought off University of the East-1’s Kryssel Cueva and last year’s Battle of Champions winner Francislyn Cais, 21-13. Manzano scored three points on her kills, blocks and service winner, allowing Pangasinan to unleash a 6-1 run for a 15-9 lead, after Cais and Cueva stayed close, 7-9. “Tinibayan namin ang defense sa likod. Maganda ang power serves nila,” said the 24-year old Benitez, who now works for the Benguet Electric Cooperative. On the other hand, Aranda and San Pedro pulled off a 21-15, beating of La Salle-Dasmarinas spikers Giselle Bembo and Iari Yongco, before turning back Pangasinan-2’s Cassandra Lleda and Melanie Carrera, 21-17. Aranda, a 22-year-old Physical Education student, had three service and turned the tables on Pangasinan-2, which even led 16-14. Her efforts touched off a 7-0 windup that put her team in strong contention for a semis berth in Group A. |
