Antonio L. Tiu is New elected FESSAP Honorary President
By Graham C. Lim

Prominent businessman-philanthropist Antonio L. Tiu was unanimously elected as the Honorary President of the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) following a recent online-meeting by its Board of Trustees.

This development was announced by Prof. Robert Milton Calo, FESSAP Executive Vice President, who presided over the regular Board of Trustees due to the absence of erstwhile president Angel Ngu, who was unavailable due to an international trip.

Prof. Calo and Atty. Maria Luz Arzaga-Mendoza, who was designated the Chair of the Election Committee, oversaw the election proceedings that brought Antonio Tiu to the organization’s highest honorary post.

The smooth transition of power from Angel Ngu to Antonio Tiu was very commendable as the FESSAP continues to uphold its commitment to serve university student-athletes from the young generation.

Antonio Tiu is not new to the FESSAP, for he was the Philippines’ Head of Delegation to the 27th Summer Universiade held in Kazan, Russia in 2013. The Kazan Universiade was so special as the country bagged its first-ever gold medal in Universiade history by way of Grandmaster Wesley So in men’s chess.

At the time, Mr. Tiu headed FESSAP Board of Trustees and was subsequently named as the Honorary Chairman of FESSAP from 2013-2015.

Mr. Tiu has a herculean task ahead as the year-long pandemic remains unchecked and sports competitions worldwide have slowed down, if not totally scrapped for the health and safety of the athletes.

But Tiu is not to shy away from challenges that have come in his way as evidenced by his past contributions to FESSAP.

Angel Ngu, whose two-year term ended on February 15, 2021.  Under Ngu’s leadership, the Philippines copped its second Universiade gold medal by way of national athlete E.J. Obiena’s victory in the men’s pole vault.

Tiu will also serve for a two-year term (2021-23) and is expected to pursue some of the activities and programs left behind by Angel Ngu that will only redound to the betterment of Filipino student-athletes and the upliftment of Philippine sports in general.

Moreover, the Board confirmed that Angel Ngu is commended as the FESSAP  Honorary Life President. It was in 2017 that former FESSAP president, Mr. David U. Ong was also acclaimed as FESSAP Honorary Life President after his term ended.

“I am ready to serve the FESSAP to my best of my ability,” said the much-revered Antonio Tiu, who heads Agri Nurture Inc. (ANI), which is one of the leading agricultural businesses in the country. “Notwithstanding the pandemic, we hope to come up with sports programs, including on-line training and seminars, that will keep the student-athletes mentally active and vibrant during the pandemic times.”

The FESSAP is the sole national university sports organization officially recognized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). It is also affiliated with other prestigious international organizations such as Asian University Sports Federation (AUSF), Asia Pacific University Sports Union (APUSU), and ASEAN University Sports Council (AUSC) as the country’s representative.

The current FESSAP Board of Trustees is headed by the Honorable Alvin Tai Lian, the Chairman of the Board. Atty. Baldomero C. Estenzo from the University of Cebu is the Vice-Chairman.

Other than Antonio Tiu and Prof. Calo, the other members of the FESSAP Board of Trustees are four (4) Vice Presidents' Dr. Jesus Rodrigo Torres of the Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), Mr. Felix O. Tiukinhoy Jr. of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (CESAFI); Col. Ariel Profirio Querubin of Philippine Federation of Body Builders-PFBB, and Dr. Gregorio J. Rodis (president of Bataan Peninsula State University), CEO/Secretary General Graham C. Lim;  Treasurer Miss Jeane E. Monteverde; Board Secretary Miss Maria Cecilia V. Sarmiento; and Directors Miss Alma M. Jocson from the Private Schools Association (PRISSA), Miss Lualhati Dela Cruz from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), Miss Ann Janeth G. Garcia (her alternate Mr. JC A. Clarito) of FISU Ambassador, Mr. Sean Elijah W. Siy of the FESSAP’s Student-Athletes Union (SAU), Mr. Joseph A. Sy from the Philippine Inter-School Sport Association (PISSA), Mr. Allan D. Soria from the State Colleges Association, and Miss Loren Chloe  Balaoing from the Cordillera Administrative Region.

Mr. Tiu hopes restrictions to travel imposed by the government due to COVID-19 will soon ease with the distribution of vaccines nationwide, thus paving the way for local and foreign sports competitions to return.

If so, the FESSAP intends to take part in the 31st Summer Universiade in Chengdu, China in August 2021 and the 30th Winter Universiade in Lucerne, Switzerland in December 2021.

Moreover, a joint-cooperation and partnership between the FESSAP, headed by Mr. Tiu and the Philippine Inter-School Sport Association (which is recognized by the International School Sport Federation -ISF), led by its President Mr. Alvin Tai Lian and his Secretary-General Joseph Sy, has been struck to jointly support the high school student-athletes that will compete in the 18th Gymnasiade, also known as the 18th World School Games, in Jinjiang City in China in October 2021.

Moreover, PISSA president Alvn Tai Lian the appointed Honorary Head of Delegation to the 18th Gymnasiade is Mr. Yang Hua Hong of Omni Electrical & Lighting.

In addition to his position in the FESSAP hierarchy, Mr. Tiu likewise is the president of the National Orienteering of the Philippines (NOP), which is affiliated with the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) that is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Mr. Tiu is the CEO of a publicly listed agricultural trading company, Agri Nurture, Inc (ANI), a listed agriculture firm that engages in the manufacturing and distribution of pure fruit beverages and dried fruit snacks, process fruit mix, frozen fruits, vegetables, and dairy and rice products, and also the CEO of fintech conglomerate Greenergy Holdings Inc. (GREEN).

Mr. Tiu is the President and CEO of the Philippine Infradev Holdings, Inc., and Makati City Subway Inc., a joint venture with the City Government of Makati for the construction and operate the multi-billion dollar intra-city subway project.

The FESSAP is undertaking other sports projects but much of its plan is dependent on the containment of the coronavirus. Among the competitions in the backburner are the Philippine University Basketball League (PUBL), Philippine University Volleyball League (PUVL), and the Philippine University Swimming League (PUSL), and other different National Students Championships in September or October 2021 that will serve as the qualifying tournament to the 20th ASEAN University Games in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand in June 2022.

Also on hold are qualifying international competitions in archery, athletics, badminton, wushu, swimming, table tennis, and lawn tennis. (gcl)

Mission Accomplished: Obiena’s Gold Haul

30th Summer Universiade - Mission Accomplished: Obiena’s Gold Haul
By Graham C. Lim

Naples, Italy  ---- It was a surprising turn of events, even in the eyes of officials from the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) that sent him to the 30th Summer Universiade (SU) in Napoli, Italy this month.

With support coming only from the privately-funded FESSAP,  23-year-old Ernest John Obiena showed he was made of sterner stuff when he copped the country’s second Universiade gold medal ever by topping the men’s pole vault event in athletics before an appreciative crowd at the San Paolo Stadium in the city of Naples in southern Italy.

Obiena, a product of Chiang Kai Shek College (CKSC) and the University of Santo Tomas (UST), ruled the event on a Friday evening (July 12) where seemingly, all the stars in the sky were aligned in his favor.

Obiena’s gold medal-winning performance was 5.76 on the height meters.  Germany’s Torben Blech also registered 5.76 meters but the former took the gold with just two jumps – one less than the German athlete.

Blech settled for the silver.  Also making it to the medal podium was Belgium’s B.J. Broeders (5.51 meters), who copped the bronze.

Obiena was a standout in the Filipino-Chinese Amateur Athletic Federation (FCAAF) track and field competitions during his high school days at CKSC.

The soft-spoken Obiena spent some time in Italy in preparation for the Napoli Universiade.  He will continue to stay there for some time before embarking on another international tournament in August – the Diamond Athletics Championships to be organized by the IAAF.

For his golden feat, FESSAP President Angel Ngu, Chair Alvin Tai Lian and honorary president David Ong doff their hats off this gentleman athlete.

Prof. Robert Milton Calo, Chair of the Universiade Preparation Committee, sent text message congratulating Ernest John Obiena for his great performance in bringing honor to the country.

EJ Obiena is the second athlete to be sent by the FESSAP who brought honor to the Philippines by romping away with a Universiade gold.

Woodpusher wizard Wesley So, who has since migrated to the U.S. to seek greener pasture due to the political patronage employed the top local sports officials in the past, also won a Universiade gold in men’s chess during the 2013 Kazan Universiade in the Russian Republic in 2013.

Ironically, a grandmaster, Wesley So also emerged victorious via a tie-breaker.  A deadlock among seven athletes resulted in a blitz contest between So and his Armenian foe, who held the white pieces but was time-troubled to complete 40 moves.

Overall, the Philippines, through FESSAP, has won four medals in the Summer Universiade.

The other medalists are Samuel Thomas Harper Morrison from Far Eastern University in men’s taekwondo during the 2011 Shenzhen Universiade in the People’s Republic of China and Jomar Balangui from the University of Baguio City in men’s wushu during the 2017 Taipei Universiade in Taiwan.

Both Morrison and Balangui won the silver medal.

The FESSAP has been sending athletes to the Summer Universiade since it was recognized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) in 2009 in Serbia as the lone national university sports federation from the Philippines.
The FISU is the international governing body for university sports.

The Summer Universiade, which is a prestigious multi-sport competition, is organized by the FISU along with the Winter Universiade and World University Championships in various sports.

This marked the fifth consecutive time that the FESSAP has sent Filipino university athletes to the Summer Universiade.  In the past, it also funded the country’s participation in  the 2011 Shenzhen Universiade in China, 2013 Kazan Universiade in Russia, 2015 Gwangju Universiade Games in the Republic of Korea and 2017 Chinese Taipei Universiade in Taiwan.

Considered by many as the Olympics at the university level, the biennial Summer Universiade attracted more than 150 countries and 8,000 university athletes and team officials during the Napoli Universiade, including the delegation from sports powers the United States, Germany, France, Russia, South Korea, Japan and China.

Some of the legendary sports figures who once took part in the Summer Universiade in the past included all-time NBA great Michael Jordan, Yao Ming (basketball) and Li Ning (gymnastics) from China.

The Philippines’ participation in the 2019 Napoli Universiade was made possible with the generous support of Bestank Corporation, OMNI Electrical & Lights from Yatai International Corporation, Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), Mapua University, Megaworld Corporation, Globe Telecom, San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Amusement & Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), Bataan Peninsula State University, Republic Biscuit, University of Baguio, and the Philippine Delegations’ Official outfitter is ASICS Tiger from Sonak Corporation-Philippines.

This early, the FESSAP is already preparing for the next Summer Universiade two years from now.  The 31st edition of the Summer Universiade will be held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China in August 2021.

Are more medals in the offing? Just wait.  The best is yet to come!

Zheng Cheng-Gong Cup: Mission accomplished.

The Philippine National Police basketball team recently took part in the 9th Zheng Cheng-Gong Cup international men’s basketball competitions in the bustling and booming city of Nan’an, Fujian province in the People’s Republic of China.

More than the results on the floor, the PNP Defenders played the role of the ambassadors of goodwill to the hilt, earning raves from their co-players from seven other teams from Taiwan, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the host country.

“The players adhered to fair play and sportsmanship throughout the five-day tournament and this is a pleasant development in international basketball,” said Thailand’s Hi-Tech team manager Piyapong Piroon. “Win or lose, they never resorted to foul play.

Along the way, the PNP squad also fostered friendship and camaraderie among its peers and even to the local police force. Many more were awed by the popularity of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, who had just come from a state visit to Beijing together with a business delegation.

The local organizers were much thankful of Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) Secretary General Graham C. Lim, who was instrumental in bringing in club teams from Korea (Enerskin), Malaysia (all-star selection), Thailand Basketball League (TBL) champs Hi-Tech and the PNP Defenders.

Lim was boosted by the presence of Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) president David Ong; Asia-Pacific University Sports Union (APUSU) president and FESSAP Board chair Alvin Tai Lian; businessman-sportsman Tai Xin Ming; Megaworld Corporation & FESSAP Honorary Vice Chair’s Danilo Madlansacay; and International Basketball Federation (FIBA –Asia) Secretary General Emeritus and Asian University Basketball Federation (AUBF) Honorary President Dato’ Yeoh Choo Hock of Malaysia.

The PNP team leader was led by Police Senior Superintendent Gilberto Cruz with Federico “Eric” Samson as PNP Head Coach and assisted by Juven Formacil. Edmundo Ang, Team Coordinator; Maria Cecilia Sarmiento, Secretary; and players are Harold Decena, Abul Khair Bayabao, Japheth Cabahug, Ronaldo Abaya, Crislyn Elopre, Ricardo Cabrera Jr., Harold Sta. Cruz, Rodel Ongutan, Alejandro Yanguiling Jr., Antonio Tolentino Jr., and Paul Ogayon.

Other teams that saw action in the 9th edition of the Zheng Chenggong Cup were Taiwan’s Fubon Braves, which featured Brooklyn Nets playmaker Jeremy Lin’s younger brother Joseph Shu-Wei Lin and American import Liam Paul McMorrow, and Kin Men Kaoliang, which was bannered by former pro-import Eugene Phelps; Singapore’s Tong Whye Physical Association, which had four Filipinos on its roster led by the Philippines’ Development League veteran and University of the East product Paul Christian Zamar, John Michael Noble Dagatan, Michael Gierald Parala Gomez and Ramsie Cinco Da Elvir; and the host Nan’an selection.

In the end, the one-game finals featured a pair of unbeaten teams from Taiwan.
The Fubon Braves broke away from a close game with a 14-0 blast bridging the third and fourth quarters to erase a 55-50 deficit and moved ahead for good, 64-55, early in the fourth frame.

The tree-like McMorrow paced the 5-0 Braves with 26 points. He was backed up by Wen Cheng Tsai’s 19 markers. Lin contributed eight points.
Phelps, who suited up for Phoenix Petroleum in the recently-concluded PBA Governors’ Cup, netted 30 points in a losing cause.

In the battle for third place, Nan’an, which topped the 8th Zheng Cheng-Gong Cup, whipped Korea’s Enerskin, 107-81.

Zamar, a son of former national team coach Boysie Zamar who last played for Cafe France in the PBA D-League, produced the tournament’s single-game individual high with 40 points in seventh-place Singapore’s 93-91 double-overtime loss to Korea’s Enerskin. (gcl)

FISU, FESSAP CEMENT PARTNERSHIP

“The FESSAP (Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines) is doing a fantastic job in promoting university sports in the Philippines.”

With those words from International University Sports Federation (FISU) secretary general Eric Saintrond, the partnership between the FISU and FESSAP has been further strengthened.

The Belgium-born Saintrond was in Manila last September 6-9 to check out on the FESSAP’s preparations for the World University Cycling Championship to be hosted by Tagaytay City in March next year.

Saintrond’s four-day Manila visit, his first to the Philippines, also was to explore more projects for the Philippines, particularly the FESSAP, which is the sole  university sports federation in the country that has been recognized by the FISU since 2009.

“My visit here is to explore more projects for the Philippines, projects for the FESSAP, for university sports and for all the student communities in the Philippines,” said Saintrond during a 17-minute “live” interview by PTV Sports over national television last September 7.

Saintrond also said the FISU is already planning another project for the FESSAP, possibly world university golf in 2018, according to Saintrond.  “The dream would be to organize a major multi-sports event, which is the Universiade (in 2019), in the Philippines, which is another project we want to work on.”

The FISU was established in 1949 and counts more than 170 countries as members to date.  It was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1961 as the sole organization running university sports in the world.

The FISU organizes the Summer Universiade and Winter Universiade biennially during odd years.   The Universiade, which is also billed as the World University Games, has attracted prominent university athletes from all over the world, including those from the United States, People’s Republic of China and the Russian Republic.

The FISU also organizes World University Championships for the different sports.

The FESSAP has sent athletes to the past three editions of the Summer Universiade and the country has snared a gold medal and a silver medal during the time.

In the 2009 games in Shenzhen, China, youthful Samuel Thomas Harper Morrison brought home a silver in men’s taekwondo.  Two years later, in Kazan, Russia, the Philippines captured its first ever gold in Universiade history by way of Grandmaster Wesley So in men’s chess.

Filipino athletes also saw action in the 28th Universiade in Gwangju City, South Korea last July.

The next Summer Universiade will be hosted by Chinese-Taipei in 2017.
