CEBU City (Philippines) -- Seven weightlifters -- six men and one female -- topped the search for the top weightlifters in the country conducted by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) last Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Cebu Coliseum Weightlifting.
Dubbed as the second National Students Weightlifting Championships, the event serves as the qualifying round to the 29th Summer Universiade in Taipei scheduled on Aug.19-30.
Of the seven, only one of them was a female contestant in Annalou Polistico, who had a best lift of 40 kg in the snatch and a 50 kg in the clear and jerk.
While only Polistico braved to join the tryouts in the female division, it turned out that the most promising female weightlifter could still be known in a year time as 17-year old Elreen Ann Ando of Hipodromo, Cebu City and a 3rd year high high school student of UC, is close to follow the footsteps of Rio de Janeiro Olympics silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz.
Ando acted as loader in last Saturday’s event as she is not yet qualified to join the tryout because the age limit is at least 18-25 years old.
But according to technical announcer Danny Catingub, an official of the Cebu Weightlifting Association who is closely monitoring the progress of Ando's training, he said that Ando can easily become the country's best female weightlifter if given the proper exposure.
Catingub said that Diaz had all praises to Ando because “the said teenager can also do what Diaz did in the Rio Olympics.”
Those who showed their best in their respective weight categories in the men's division were Clark Cuico (56- kg. cat), Arvin Iba (69 kg cat), Elie Perez (69kg cat), Rue Collen Pabuaya (85 kg cat), Kurk Kuffka Abala (94 kg cat), and Kevin Renzo Nisnisan (105+kg cat).
Cuico had the best lift of 90 kg in the snatch and had 120 kg in the clear and jerk while Iba had 80 kg in snatch and 105 kg in the clear and jerk.
Perez, the lone participant from Bohol, made the most impressive performance as he lifted 87 kg in the snatch and had a mind-boggling 122 kg in the clear and jerk.
Pabuaya lifted 85 kg in the snatch while 103 kg in the clear and jerk, Abala was also impressive with his best lift of 93 kg in the snatch and the second bet of 110 kg in the clear and jerk even as Nisnisan had an even 90-90 kg in both the snatch and clear and jerk sequences or stances.
The tryout was supervised by FESSAP officials Cecille Sarmiento and Kelly Rojas. (gcl)

THE search for the country’s representatives to the 27th Sumer Universiade
in Kazan, Russia continued in Cebu City over the weekend.
Weightlifter Kelly Kaye Rojas of University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) became the newest Filipino athlete to earn the right to represent the country in the prestigious competition set July 6-17, 2013.
Rojas crowned herself as the women’s 48-kgs champion in the national students weightlifting competition hosted by the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) in cooperation with the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP).
Rojas defeated entries from Universidad de Zamboanga, Guagua National Colleges of Pampanga, Holy Name University of Bohol, PMI Colleges of Tagbilaran City, University of Cebu and National Capital Region (NCR) representative University of East during the week-long event held at the University of Cebu campus.
The weightlifting competitions were organized by Atty. Baldomero Estenzo of University of Cebu, with Felix Tiukinhoy, who is also the CESAFI commissioner, as the executive director.
The other officials who supervised the Cebu event were tournament director Danny Catingub and members Jess Himotas of University of San Jose Recoletos, Ramon Solis and Bong Atilano of Universidad de Zamboanga.
The competition is fully supported by Healthy Options, H2O Technologies Philippines Inc, AgriNurture, Inc., San Miguel Corporation, Bestank and Cobra Energy Drink.
FESSAP president David Ong congratulated the organizing committee members for the successful staging of the FESSAP-supported weightlifting event.
Ong also announced that the other qualifying tournaments in other sports, notably archery, chess, badminton, table tennis, tennis, and fencing will soon be held in different venues.
In 2013 Kazan Universiade, the Philippines will participate in 11 sports -- 10 compulsory and one optional -- in the prestigious, two-week long sports and cultural festival being organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
The Universiade is considered as the second biggest sporting event next only to the Olympic Games.
Kazan, which is widely considered as the ‘Sports Capital’ of Russia, was chosen by FISU as host city over Vigo, Spain and Gwangju, Korea.
In 2013, more than 13,500 athletes and officials from a record 170 countries are expected to converge in Kazan.
About 100,000 tourists and fans from Russia and abroad will also visit Kazan both to support their countries and discover the millennial historical heritage of the city, its rich culture and modern infrastructure, according to the official FISU website.
The Universiade will also be held in Gwangju, Korea in 2015 and Chinese-Taipei in 2017.
